THE FOURTH U.S.-MONGOLIA BUSINESS FORUM June 9, 2009 Washington, DC
The U.S. Department of Commerce, in conjunction with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Mongolia; the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy of Mongolia; the Foreign Investment and Foreign Trade Agency of Mongolia; the Mongolian Embassy; and Trade and Development Bank of Mongolia, hosted the Fourth U.S.-Mongolia Business Forum on June 9, 2009, in Washington, DC. The Forum focused on the energy sector, with highlights on coal mining and power production, renewable energy, oil, gas, and nuclear energy. Rick Wade, Senior Advisor to the Secretary at the U.S. Department of Commerce, and S. Batbold, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Mongolia, delivered opening remarks at the Forum. Acting Commerce Under Secretary for International Trade Michelle ONeill delivered remarks on U.S.-Mongolian trade and economic relations. B. Ariunsan, Vice Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy of Mongolia, also spoke at the event on U.S.-Mongolian cooperation in energy sector. Other speakers included U.S. and Mongolian government officials and business executives. Acting Under Secretary Michelle ONeill and Minister S. Batbold also participated in the Forum luncheon, which was sponsored by Peabody Energy, LM Gochioco and Associates, and the North America-Mongolia Business Council. In addition to energy-related issues, presentation topics included U.S.-Mongolia trade and economic relations, Mongolias business and investment environment, and U.S. government efforts and programs on helping American companies export and invest abroad. During the coal session, the panelists discussed the current needs of Mongolias coal sector, the development of the U.S. coal industry and the importance of clean coal technology utilization. The renewable energy panel focused on future clean and renewable technology options as well as Mongolias potential for developing this sector. Other sessions focused on the development of Mongolias oil, gas, and nuclear energy sectors. The Forum was attended by more than 170 representatives from the U.S. and Mongolian government and business communities, far exceeding the number of attendees from the previous three Forums. The Forum provided valuable information on commercial opportunities in Mongolia, exposed U.S. companies to business prospects in Mongolia's mining and energy sectors, and helped to facilitate commercial partnerships between U.S. and Mongolian companies. As part of the Forum, the U.S. Department of Commerce, in conjunction with the Mongolian Embassy, organized site visits for the Mongolian delegation in the Washington, DC area and Denver, CO, to meet with private sector mining and energy companies and U.S. Government agencies.
